Sandy annihilated Fire Island, but it also unearthed a cool shipwreck11/16/2012
Check out this shipwrecked schooner, a piece of buried treasure unearthed by superstorm Sandy when it blew through Fire Island, N.Y. Folks have previously caught glimpses of the ship's skeleton after other storms, but this time it's completely visible — a testament to the fury of Sandy, which fully submerged the island and flooded 80 percent of the homes there. Experts say we're looking at the Bessie White, a Canadian ship built before 1880 that ran aground on a foggy day about 90 years ago. The seamen (and their cat) all escaped, but tons of coal disappeared into the sea. Hurry if you want to see it. Nature is reburying it in sand as we speak. [Source]
