Shocking: At least one human organ is sold every hour
5/28/2012In a statistic that would be at home in a horror movie, the World Health Organization estimates that at least one human organ is bought illegally every hour. Experts say the current organ of choice is the kidney, likely because of a rise in health problems like diabetes. It's a lucrative business: Desperate patients will pay up to $200,000 for an organ, while the equally-desperate donors receive as little as $5,000 as compensation. WHO official Luc Noel says the trade of organs decreased between 2006 and 2007 but that it's on the rise again: "The stakes are so big, the profit that can be made so huge, that the temptation is out there."
