Snow White was no fairy tale, says scholar
6/1/2012If anyone should be happy about the recent premiere of "Snow White and the Huntsman," it's Eckhard Sander. The movie debut is bringing renewed attention to the scholar's 1994 comparison of the fairy-tale character to the real-life Margarete von Waldeck, a countess who grew up in a German mining town in the 1500s. Just like her cartoon counterpart, the countess was dragged to a strange city by her "evil stepmother" when she was 16 and fell in love with Prince Philip ll of Spain. The only thing missing from this tale is the trademark Disney ending: Margarete was apparently poisoned so she couldn't marry her real-life prince.
Do you think this, or any fairy tale, is based on fact?
