The Social Security office is not buying bullets to kill old people

9/5/2012

When the Social Security Administration announced it was purchasing 174,000 hollow-point bullets, the reaction in some corners of the Internet ranged from the conspiracy-minded (“preparations for civil unrest,” said one website) to the really conspiracy-minded (The Daily Caller theorized they were to use on American citizens). The web chatter became so great the SSA created a website to explain the order — to arm its agents who handle fraud cases and other crimes. The agency said its agents carry .357 caliber pistols when they make arrests (589 last year), execute warrants and investigate threats against SSA officials, employees and customers. The hollow-point bullets are standard for law enforcement. [Source]
