Plane flies 4,000 miles without any fuel
7/25/2012Plane tickets aren’t exactly cheap these days, partially due to all that oil and fuel most flying machines consume, but there is hope slowly moving across the horizon. A plane just flew from Europe to Africa and back purely on solar power, making it the first to make a transcontinental journey using just the power of the sun. Sure, it took two months to travel the 4,000 miles, but the plane, Solar Impulse, was being tested for endurance and reliability, not speed. The heck with miles per gallon -- when the plane was parked in its hangar after flying each day, its batteries were nearly always still full. Now that’s a ray of sunshine. [Source]
Would you be into flying on a solar-powered plane?
