South Korean fencer refuses to leave arena amid controversial loss
7/30/2012
For every victory and display of elation at the Olympics, there's a matching moment of despair. But for South Korean fencer Shin Lam, her agony went on and on and on. Shin thought she had beaten her opponent, German Britta Heidemann, but for an unknown reason the clock was reset from zero to one second. In that moment, Heidemann was able to score a tie-breaking hit that sent her to the gold medal match. Shin burst into tears and her coach launched an immediate appeal, but in order for it to be valid, Shin had to remain on the piste; her leaving would be seen as acceptance of the outcome. Finally, after more than an hour and a half, Shin left in tears after the appeal was denied. [Source]
