Tacky spectator attempts to sabotage the Tour de France

7/15/2012

The Tour de France was hit with sabotage on the 14th stage of the race on Sunday. A spectator reportedly threw a box of tacks across the road near the summit of Mur de Peguere, a high mountain pass in the French Pyrenees, puncturing the tires of around 30 riders, including defending champion Cadel Evans. Race director Jean-Francois Pescheux said they were “the kind of tacks you use in mattresses or carpets” and that finding the culprit will be difficult because there were thousands of fans near the edge of the road. The athletes were all good sports though--classy cyclists encouraged one another not to take advantage of their out-of-commission counterparts, and the race continued as normal once everyone got their tires replaced.  [Source]
