Don't worry, Florida, those fireballs in the sky are only 'sporadic'
2/19/2013Considering a meteor shower just slammed Russia and an asteroid just missed colliding with Earth, it's no surprise that South Floridians got jittery when they looked up Sunday night and saw mysterious orange and red fireballs lighting up the sky. The Coast Guard was flooded with reports of flares from Jacksonville to Key West, though no injuries were reported. The strange light show was likely a sporadic meteor, a rarely seen but not uncommon occurrence that's not part of a larger meteor shower, says Mike Hankey of the American Meteor Society. "People should not be scared of the sky falling or anything at all," he adds. Which doesn't sound as comforting as you might hope. [Source]
