Determined gay teen wins battle to bring his boyfriend to prom

2/16/2013

Stacy Dawson just wanted to attend prom with the person of his choice, like any other student at Scott County Central High School in Sikeston, Mo. Last year, administrators told the openly gay 17-year-old he couldn’t bring his boyfriend as his date. They cited the school handbook, which reads, "students will be permitted to invite one guest, girls invite boys and boys invite girls." The Southern Poverty Law Center, determined to end a policy they deemed unfair, sent a letter on Dawson’s behalf to the school that threatened legal action. Sufficiently cowed, the school backed down, saying Dawson and his fella could attend the dance, and that they would remove the line from the handbook. [Source]
