This is not just a vegan issue, majority of us would like our @Starbucks drink bug free. How about using beet juice? http://t.co/Me6E9Bjc

Starbucks uses insects to make its Frappuccinos

3/28/2012

Who doesn't love a refreshing Starbucks Frappuccino on a hot day? Delicious strawberries, ice, whipped cream and, er, some crushed insects? It's been revealed that the coffee company uses cochineal extract in Strawberry Frappuccinos to boost their bright pink color, and for the non-scientific among us, cochineal extract comes from ground up cochineal bugs. (Hear that, PETA?) But before you dismiss this as disgusting, keep in mind that you've likely been eating these critters for a long time. ABC News says it's an FDA-approved ingredient that's been around for centuries, and it's commonly used in other foods such as jams and alcohols.
