Student sues school to keep 'emotional support' rodent
4/4/2012A Grand Valley State University student has filed a lawsuit claiming that the school won't allow her to keep an "emotional support animal" in her dorm room. Fair enough, but the furball that Kendra Velzen is fighting for is a guinea pig (which, incidentally, has died since litigation began). Velzen's attorney says that Grand Valley is violating the Fair Housing Act, but school officials say they already told Velzen that she could keep a (living) guinea pig in her dorm room but not in "common areas, to class or [in] food-service areas." Velzen rejected those restrictions, though it seems reasonable to us that other students might not want to sit across from a rodent in the dining hall.
Is Velzen or the school being unreasonable?
