Sweet! Putting sugar on a wound may speed healing
2/16/2013Rubbing salt in someone's wound is synonymous with needless cruelty, but sugar is apparently another matter. Zimbabwe-born nurse and doctoral student Moses Murandu has launched a trial at three British hospitals in order to prove that an old family recipe in which granulated sugar is used to treat wounds is medically sound. According to Murandu, the sugar draws the water away from wounds, depriving the bacteria of the conditions they need to grow, and accelerating healing. Early results are promising, though only 35 patients have received the sweet treatment so far. Note to Mary Poppins: A spoonful of sugar may not just help the medicine go down. It may actually be the medicine. [Source]
