Supersize people eat so much we may run out of food

6/18/2012

While obesity-rights advocates argue for extra airplane seats and our more corpulent counterparts blissfully buy extra-wide Barcaloungers, a study says we're eating so much that our planet is running out of food. Nearly 75 percent of North Americans are overweight, and the rest of the world is catching up, adding a shocking 16.5 million tons of extra poundage to the planet. To sustain all that extra weight, we're greedily munching enough food to sustain an extra 1 billion people, threatening our own food security. The average human has ballooned from 137 pounds in 2005 to a bloated 179 pounds for Americans. Think we're going to order a small next time at the drive-thru.
