Supreme Court upholds ‘Obamacare’
6/28/2012In a 5-4 decision that was guaranteed all along to piss off half the country no matter how it turned out, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled today President Obama's health care law is constitutional, and that the controversial "individual mandate" -- which requires almost all Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty -- is legal as a tax. Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, considered to be the signature achievement of his presidency, in March 2010 after heated debate in both houses of Congress. The Supreme Court justices heard challenges to "Obamacare" three months ago in an extraordinary three-day hearing. Most public opinion polls show that Americans oppose the law, though they favor many of its mandates, including covering people with pre-existing conditions and allowing kids to stay on their parents' policies longer.
How will this ruling affect the presidential election in November?
