Hero grandparents take 5 kids into the sea to wait out fires

1/9/2013

Can't imagine the hell of Australia's 104-degree heat wave laced with bushfires? These photos of grandmother Tammy Holmes escaping into the sea with her five grandchildren should help. The Holmeses were baby-sitting when fires tore through their town and swallowed up their home. Desperate to avoid the flames, they headed into the water with their dog Polly. Grandpa Tim Holmes snapped these now-viral pics and sent one off to his daughter to let her know they were alive. They bobbed under the jetty for more than two hours, splashing water onto it to prevent it from burning and gasping for oxygen in the polluted air. Then Grandpa snagged a dinghy and rowed them to safety. A true family hero. [Source]
