Charity funds surgery for teen who lost penis in accident
7/27/2012
When he was 9 years old, Luis Canelos sustained an injury sure to make every man squirm. While picking up his father’s rifle, the gun discharged, shooting the boy in the groin. The accident destroyed his genitals, except for a portion of his right testicle. Now 17, the boy from the Peruvian Amazon is in Miami, where he will soon undergo a phalloplasty, a surgery to reconstruct his penis using a fibular bone from a cadaver. The procedure is being covered by the International Kids Fund’s Wonderfund, a charity that helps children get medical care they can’t receive or afford in their native countries. Luis said he hopes the surgery will let him move on with his life, including following his dream of going to college. [Source]
