Teens in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are reportedly paying around $100 for fake fashion braces, with Hello Kitty and Mickey Mouse designs being particularly popular. Despite some health concerns – the fake braces can drop loose pieces down the throat, may contain lead and have reportedly caused two deaths – this awkward trend is thought to be a status symbol because real braces cost so much.
