Click quick: See famous arch's dramatic collapse

1/11/2013

A natural cliff-side arch on Tennessee Beach, in California's Marin County, has been photographed by many people over many decades, but the pictures grad student Robert Wills snapped of it in late December are unlike the rest: They capture the arch's dramatic collapse. Wills had hiked out to admire the stormy surf. Suddenly, he heard a crack, the sound of falling rock. Then "the arch started to buckle in on itself," he writes on his blog. "The entire surrounding hillside started to slip off into the ocean in a thundering roar as boulders the size of a piano crashed into the surf and the sand." The arch was gone in seconds. The photos? Unforgettable. Click quickly to flip-view the tumble.
