Tennessee may train and arm teachers to prevent shootings

12/19/2012

As the nation seeks to prevent another Sandy Hook, a Tennessee politician thinks he has the answer: secret heat-packing teachers. State Sen. Frank Niceley plans to introduce a bill allowing the state to fund a guns-in-the-classroom effort, which Gov. Bill Haslam says he'll consider. Niceley said arming teachers would be an effective alternative to requiring schools to hire armed "resource officers." "Say some madman comes in. The first person he would probably try to take out was the resource officer," Niceley told Talking Points Memo. "But if he doesn't know which teacher has training, then he wouldn't know which one had [a gun]." Return fire, he suggested, could make the person "take cover, maybe go ahead and commit suicide." [Source]
