Timbuktu heritage sites destroyed, witnesses say
6/30/2012The ill-conceived strategy of destroying history in order resolve contemporary religious conflicts has been heartbreakingly repeated in the ancient city of Timbuktu in the country of Mali today. Witnesses say UNESCO World Heritage-listed mausoleums have been destroyed by armed fighters from the Ansar Dine Islamist group who intend to destroy all 16 sites in the historic trading town. The al-Qaida-linked separatists have effectively had free reign in the region since they successfully seized the northern two-thirds of the West African country in April, seeking to establish strict Islamic law.
Is there anything we can do to protect historic sites?
