48 is Sandy victims' lucky number, thanks to this pitcher's donation
11/17/2012It's normal practice for a veteran joining a new team to buy his old number from whatever player currently holds that jersey, usually with a decent sum of cash or some luxury goods. But when Torii Hunter joined the Detroit Tigers and offered pitcher Rick Porcello a generous sum for his number, 48, Porcello had one word for his new teammate: No. "I'm like, 'What's wrong with him?'" Hunter told reporters. It's not that Porcello hates money, but he wanted it to go to a better cause than just padding his own bank account. "He said, 'The money that you offered me, could you donate it to this organization for Hurricane Sandy?'" explained Hunter. "That's the kind of guy Rick Porcello is." For New Jersey residents still recovering from the storm, it looks like 48 is your new lucky number. [Source]
