Transgender student president reveals new name, birthday
5/13/2012Ah, spring! With the rebirth of nature comes the urge to clean and start fresh, the burst of bud into blossom and the coming-out of young people as transgender. Hey, it might be a thing! Against Me!'s Tom Gabel came out earlier this week, and now the 21-year-old outgoing student president of American University In Washington D.C. has put an editorial in the campus newspaper, "The Eagle," candidly confessing a lifetime of gender conflict and announcing a new birthday, May 5, which was the first day she lived openly as a woman on campus. Sarah McBride's editorial is being praised as a remarkable step forward from the bullying that has historically dogged LGBT students and claimed the life of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi in 2010.
