First Hindu US rep likely to take oath on Bhagavad Gita
11/9/2012Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii just became the first practicing Hindu elected to the U.S. House of Representatives — which means that when she takes her oath of office, she'll likely to do so not on a Bible but on the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu holy book. Gabbard, a Democrat, is just 31 years old but boasts a pretty ass-kicking resume, having served 12 months with the Hawaiian National Guard and then becoming the first woman named a "distinguished honor graduate" at the Alabama Military Academy. Hopefully that will help her avoid some of the anti-American catcalls that befell Rep. Keith Ellison, when he took the oath on a Koran. [Source]
