Group says mercury levels mean tuna should be out of schools
9/20/2012What's for lunch? Not tuna, and not in schools, if one nonprofit has its way. The Mercury Policy Project, a Vermont-based coalition of consumer groups, released a report that found highly variable levels of mercury in canned tuna, and are recommending the USDA remove the fish from schools. The tuna industry countered that the bigger public health issue is that people "don’t eat enough" seafood. The group tested 59 samples from 11 states and found that the levels of mercury varied widely, even from the same container, and that some traces of mercury were higher than federal guidelines. The tuna lobby said that turning kids off tuna is "damaging" to their nutritional habits. [Source]
