Tunja, the capital of the Colombian province of Boyaca, got about 13,800 people together this week for what appears to be the world's largest coffee get-together. The event was organized by local authorities and the farmer-funded National Federation of Coffee Producers, and evidence of it has been submitted to Guinness World Records. According to Guinness, the world's largest ever "coffee party" was previously held in Jugendpark, Cologne, Germany, in August 2009. A paltry 8,162 participants were served an iced coffee drink at that event.
Interestingly, while Colombia is the world's biggest producer of "washed" Arabica coffee, per capita consumption is less than half of the U.S.' and about a quarter of Scandinavia's. Proves a prophet is not welcome in his hometown. [Source]
