Hundreds of turtles make daring but slow escape from farm in Georgia

7/20/2012

Seizing the opportunity to gain their freedom, more than 1,000 turtles made a run for it, albeit a slow one, from a Summerville, Ga., turtle farm after fences around their protected ponds were torn down. Turtle farmer (yes it's a thing) David Driver told the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office that nearly 1,600 of his turtles have made a break for nearby ponds and creeks since thieves ran off with the scrap-metal fencing. Driver says the loss is a significant hit to his business, with baby snapping turtles valued at $7 each. But he can probably take his time organizing a search party; even with that head start, these escapees couldn't have gotten very far.
