'Ugliest bird' ever hatches in German zoo

4/18/2012

Pity poor Nelson: First his siblings died. Then his parents rejected him. Now, he's earning international headlines as the "ugliest bird in the world." Nelson, who has been described as "a cross between an alien and a roasted chicken," according to the Independent, was the only one of his mother's three eggs to hatch. Luckily, Nelson lives at Bergzoo in Halle, Germany, so he's being cared for round-the-clock by zoo staff. And there's more good news -- Nelson is actually a baby Kea parrot, native to New Zealand, so when he grows up, he'll mature out of his awkward looks and grow into a sleek bird with handsome olive green and orange feathers.
