Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men can turn a blind eye with blurry new glasses

8/9/2012

Near-sightedness is now for sale. Jerusalem's "modesty patrols" are selling a handy new accessory for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men trying to obey the doctrine that forbids contact between unmarried men and women: blurry glasses. Stickers on the lenses allow clear vision for a few steps, but they fuzz over anything in the line of sight beyond that (including, of course, any woman who might be wearing short sleeves). There are also hoods and shields that restrict peripheral vision if the specs' results aren't good enough. The glasses sell for $6, and they just might be a must-have for any beach-goer concerned about a significant other's wandering eye. [Source]
