Now that most normal human beings know that blackface isn't an appropriate costume choice, let's move on to sombreros, which the University of Birmingham in England has banned as part of its crackdown on "discriminatory behavior." Students are complaining they were turned away from recent on- and off-campus costume parties for donning their ponchos and Mexican hats. Their irritation was fanned by a promotional video (see above) that emerged of one of the school's student union VPs wearing a sombrero — before the ban was instituted.
"I’m not sure why it’s deemed racist. … Would I be offended if someone came as an Englishman?" a player with the school's basketball team told the Tab student newspaper. Vicki Harris, the student union's vice president of sport, defended the ban. "It could be seen as imitation of a culture and relate to a stereotype about the race of that particular ethnicity group, even if the intention is by no means harmful." [Source]
