Or at least a hacker. The 90-day waiver to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that allowed users to open up their devices to accept multiple carriers expires on Jan. 26. That's a bummer for international travelers who often need their phones to work on different networks, to say nothing of a slap at the freedom mobile phone ownership was supposed to give everyone. There are ways of getting around it: paying full price for a phone, say. Or you can wait for an advocacy group to challenge the rule in court. But by the time that gets decided, your current contract will likely have lapsed and you'll be free to go with any carrier you want. [Source]
