New figures from the Department of Energy found that American households are spending 4 percent of their pre-tax income — an average of $2,912 — on gas, the highest percentage in 30 years. That’s despite the fact that Americans are actually using less fuel. Ouch. The pain at the pump is so acute that many experts fear that car owners will end up spending as much dough on gas as the original cost of a car over its lifetime, which means it might be time to invest in a bike.
