Navy's newest vessel is an impressively sleek, fast cargo ship

2/13/2013

The latest addition to the U.S. Navy’s fleet made its maiden port call this week, dropping in on the Port of St. Petersburg in Florida. The USNS Spearhead is the Navy’s first Joint High Speed Vessel, which is meant to support both the Army and the Navy, and is designed for rapid deployment of either troops or equipment and supplies. To that end, the 338-foot-long aluminum vessel, which can hold up to 600 tons, is built for “speed, flexibility and maneuverability” and is intended to operate in rough waters. So, basically, a huge catamaran. After making calls in St. Petersburg and Mayport, Fla., the Spearhead will make its way to Virginia Beach, which will be its home port. [Source]
