Vatican slams American nun's book on sexuality

6/5/2012

An American nun whose book tries to provide a theological explanation for gay marriage, masturbation and remarrying after divorce has been taken to the woodshed by the Vatican's doctrinal office, which declared that it should not be used by Roman Catholics. In a formal censure, the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith said Sister Margaret A. Farley's book, "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics," was "not consistent with authentic Catholic theology." Farley, an award-winning scholar, countered that she never intended the book "to be an expression of current official Catholic teaching." Oddly, the book was published in 2006, but apparently escaped the office's notice until 2010. It spent the last two years reviewing it.
