'City of Water' is actually underwater as epic floods strike Venice

11/12/2012

Venice dwellers are accustomed to water flowing through the streets in the romantic city of canals, but the torrents that surged through the watery Italian town on Sunday gave new meaning to the nickname "Floating City." Tourists traded their binoculars for bathing suits, and the "O Sole Mio" gondoliers were no doubt singing "O Acqua Mio" as high tides and pounding rains invaded the streets. According to one report, 70 percent of central Venice was underwater when the high tide maxed out at 59.06 inches.
