Very errant pickoff throw hits first-base coach in the groin

5/6/2012

Once a first-base coach hollers out a warning of pitcher's pickoff move, his eyes naturally shift to the runner diving back into the base -- and that's not always a good idea. In fact, this coach wasn't prepared at all -- spread-legged stance, arms limply at his sides -- when a wayward throw drilled him in the, uh, lap. Of course, maybe the coach figured the first baseman might actually come off the bag to prevent errant throw from allowing the runner to advance, rather than to simply wait for the rebound.
