There's no way Vickie McBride would miss her son's Ph.D. graduation ceremony — mainly because it was her graduation day, too. The newly named Dr. McBride and her son, Dr. Maurice McBride, recently shared the stage when they received their diplomas from Capella University in Minneapolis. Both McBrides have overcome obstacles that might've discouraged those of us who are less determined: Vickie became a first-time mom to Maurice at age 13 (and raised four children while juggling college and graduate school courses), and Maurice spent time in a juvenile detention facility.
When Maurice, a college professor, decided to work toward his Ph.D., he wanted his mother to be there with him. She was, earning her Ph.D. in K-12 education, while Maurice pursued organizational management. "For those who have gone through [tough situations], you can be successful," Vickie told WRDW. "You can be anything. You can do anything once you make up your mind [that's] what you want to do." [Source]
