Warning! Grapes may launch attacks on helpless shoppers
5/9/2012Attention 1920s slapstick comedians: If you need to make someone slip and fall, you can toss those banana peels and use a few grapes instead. Stepping on an errant grape has apparently caused so many accidents -- and resulted in so many lawsuits -- that a number of Australian grocery stores have considered banning them. According to the Courier Mail, grapes are Public Injury No. 1, followed by "lettuce leaves, snow peas, beans and milk." But although over $100 million in lawsuits are filed annually after grocery-aisle mishaps, customers aren't willing to give up their favorite fruits without a fight. "I've an idea for these shoppers," one commenter wrote. "Watch your step. Leave the poor grapes alone."
Do these lawsuits have any merit?
