Terrible rich couple get jail time for $262,000 welfare fraud

9/23/2012

In today's installment of "Greedy Jerks Being Greedy," a wealthy Seattle couple will serve 18 months in prison for fraud after collecting $262,000 in welfare benefits over the past eight years, despite having a lakeside home, luxury car and boat, and spending the funds on jewelry and travel. David Mark Silverstein, a successful chiropractor, reportedly posed as the landlord of his longtime girlfriend/collaborator Lyudmila Shimonova in the scheme, which even involved an audacious rent increase at one stage. In addition to prison time, both owe restitution and fines. But why it took the government so long to realize Shimonova was living in $1.2-million home remains unanswered. Don't they have Google Street View in Seattle? [Source]
