Science dashes our hopes that Tauntaun carcasses make good shelters

8/8/2012

How many times have you watched Han Solo shove Luke Skywalker into the belly of a dead Tauntaun while shouting, "Oh, please, is that even scientifically possible?!" All of the times, right? io9.com conducted an in-depth investigation, considering everything from the average nighttime temperature on the ice planet Hoth (-76 F), Skywalker's body position inside the Tauntaun and the fact that he was likely in the early stages of hypothermia. The conclusion: Han had about 47 minutes to build a warmer, drier shelter for Luke (and scrub the Tauntaun poop off his skin) before he succumbed to severe hypothermia or death. Forty-seven minutes? Guess we'll take that emergency Tauntaun out of our first aid kits. [Source]
