Welfare recipients allegedly using money at nudie clubs, liquor stores

1/7/2013

Hey, just because you're a little down and out doesn’t mean you should have to miss amateur night at the Slippery Dolphin, right? Many welfare recipients don't seem to think so, according to a New York Post report that found some beneficiaries using their government assistance to make cash withdrawals at liquor stores, sex shops, hookah parlors and other nonessential locations. The investigation examined 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from 2011 to July 2012, discovering some recipients making dozens of cash withdrawals at saloons, porn stores, bars and strip clubs. The viral report prompted an explosion of outrage on Twitter by folks who say the money should be better monitored. [Source]
