Kid recovering after stumbling upon frozen mammoth

10/5/2012

We can only imagine the "bolt" of fear that ran down the trouser leg of an 11-year-old Russian kid when he stumbled upon a woolly mammoth while fooling around in the tundra on the Taymyr Peninsula, Siberia, the northernmost tip of Eurasia. The mammoth was long dead, of course, having snuffled off its mortal coil in its mid-teens about 30,000 years ago. Scientists say it is the second most complete and well-preserved mammoth discovered in the entire history of digging up dead things and poking them with a stick. The 1100-pound prehistoric beast has been named Zhenya, the nickname of the boy who found it. [Source]
