World's rarest duck hatches adorable ducklings

4/6/2012

This fluffy duckling probably has no idea that he has just helped dramatically boost the chances of survival for the world's rarest duck. Eighteen adorable Madagascar pochards, including this one, hatched at a specially-created captivity building in Madagascar recently, bringing the species' total population to just 60. Experts once presumed the ducks were extinct, but the tough little creatures were re-discovered on a northern Madagascar lake in 2006. Scientists took some of their eggs into captivity, and it's the ducklings hatched from those eggs that have bred the super-cute additions.
