Writer visits iPad supplier, observes suicide nets firsthand
4/9/2012Rob Schmitz is the second Western reporter to tour a Foxconn factory making Apple iStuff, and he didn't find it all so peachy. Schmitz is the guy whose research forced journo Mike Daisey to admit he'd embellished tales of worker misery at Foxconn. Schmitz's story will air today, but this video and his column offer a preview: "Some workers complained about being forced to work even though they were sick," writes Schmitz. "Others said their supervisors didn't let them bill the overtime they had actually worked." There really are nets to catch suicidal jumpers and some workers told him they felt they were "treated unfairly by immediate supervisors." Most surprising finding? Workers want more overtime.
