Black vs. white young adult novel kindles racial stink
8/1/2012
It probably won't surprise you to learn that a novel set in a post-apocalyptic world where "Pearls" (white people) are ruled over by "Coals" (black people) is proving a little controversial. Young adult author Victoria Foyt has defended her self-published debut novel "Revealing Eden," the first in a series called "Save the Pearls," which she says turns the tables on race. Commentators in the blogosphere aren't buying it — probably because the book and the trailer that promotes it both feature young women in blackface. Hint: Blackface is generally frowned upon.
