Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar apologizes for gay slur

9/18/2012

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar was contrite Tuesday about his decision to write what many interpreted as a homophobic slur on the black stickers under his eyes during a game on Saturday. Escobar was suspended for three games for writing the phrase "Tu Ere Maricon," which translates to "You are a fa**ot." During a press conference on Tuesday, Escobar apologized and said "maricon" had a different context in Latino communities, and that he didn’t realize it would be considered offensive or generate controversy. Escobar will participate in an outreach program and the salary he forfeits during his suspension will go to gay advocacy groups. [Source]
