Blue Jays shortstop sports homophobic message under his eyes

9/18/2012

Was it a message or a badly thought-out practical joke by a teammate? Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar has landed himself in hot water with Major League Baseball authorities after the eye-black sticker he was wearing while playing against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday displayed a homophobic slur. The Cuban-born Escobar, 29, had the Spanish words "Tu ere maricon" written on his eye black, which is loosely translated into English as "You are a f**got." Given that the game was played under the Rogers Centre roof in Toronto, it's unclear why Escobar needed to wear eye black in the first place. Escobar plans to attend a press conference at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. [Source]
